Limón, the easternmost province, extends along the Caribbean coast from the San Juan River on the north (the border of Nicaragua) to the mouth of the Sixaola River on the south (the border of Panama). Mt. Chirripó, located in the Talamanca Mountain Range in Limón, is the highest peak in Costa Rica. The lifestyle here is laid back, giving its residents and guests time to enjoy, surfing, coral reef snorkeling, kayaking, birding and sport fishing. Limón is home to Tortugero National Park – the favorite of many tour guides – where you can float in a boat on inland canals amidst a colorful array of wildlife.

Limón province has a distinct Jamaican flavor evidenced by Carnaval celebration in October, reggae music and Caribbean cuisine.  Creole English, as well as Spanish, is spoken.  This unique cultural blend is the result of workers being brought from Jamaica in the late 1800s for the construction of the railroad line between San José and Limon. With the advent of the railroad, banana and pineapple exportation increased and the overall economy improved. After the railroad was discontinued, Limón continued to flourish as the shipping industry’s primary harbor.
